Look, I'll be honest with you... I didn't start out as some tech genius. Ten years ago, I was working a regular job and watching local business owners struggle to get customers despite doing brilliant work.

My mate Dave (he's an electrician) was the best spark I knew - could rewire a house with his eyes closed - but his phone barely rang. My friend Sarah who ran a local café made the best coffee in Belfast, but struggled to fill tables. Meanwhile, their competitors with half the skill were booked solid for months. The only difference? They were showing up on Google when people searched.

That's when it clicked. Being great at your trade or business isn't enough anymore. You need to be found online, or you might as well be invisible.

So I dove headfirst into learning everything I could about getting local businesses found on Google. I even worked at the Google Digital Garage in Belfast, where I helped hundreds of local business owners understand how to get found online. This hands-on experience taught me what actually works in the real world - not just theory, but practical solutions that get results.

During my time at Google Digital Garage, I saw the same story over and over: brilliant tradespeople, amazing restaurants, fantastic salons, professional services firms - all with incredible skills but no online presence. People often say "ranking on Google is like trying to please a picky eater." I say, "Nonsense! It's more like cooking a delicious meal for a gourmet chef." It's all about balancing the right ingredients (hint: think REVIEWS!) to create your Google Business Profile that not only pleases search engines but delights your customers too.

Dave was my first "test case" - I helped him for free just to see if I could actually make a difference. Within three months, he went from 2-3 calls a week to being booked solid. Sarah's café started getting customers from three towns over after I helped her optimize her Google presence. Both businesses doubled, and they've never looked back.

That was ten years ago. Since then, I've helped over 100 local businesses - from tradespeople to restaurants, salons to professional services - get more customers, more consistently, without the headaches of trying to figure out "digital marketing" themselves. My experience at Google Digital Garage taught me what really works in practice - and I use that experience to help UK businesses thrive.

Local business is the bedrock of our communities. When I'm not wrestling with Google's algorithms, you'll find me walking Lillie (my overly energetic Cocker Spaniel), or travelling around Belfast, Dublin, and Derry checking out local businesses - always learning what works and what doesn't.
